Today I am traveling home from one of my whirlwind trips halfway around the world filled with two fun but energy demanding programs. These trips can leave me tired and in need of recovery. It’s in times like this that it’s easy to let the world get the best of your mindset. You wake up early, tired from a long demanding week, get some movement in, pack, eat and then hit the road. It’s funny because today I really had to work to keep my mindset. I’m still on the third leg of my trip but let me share what’s happened so far.
We drove 90 minutes to the airport and about 12 km away we hit the morning rush hour parking lot. Not what you want when you want to be sure to get checked in early for the 3 transfer international flight. When we got to the airport it was hit the ground running to not be late. When we got to the counter of the check in the check in lady was on the phone (usually an ominous sign :)). When it was our turn to check in I got the news that she can’t find my ticket all the way through. She sees me in the system but can only give me a ticket from Brussels to Frankfurt and I’ll have to stop at the transfer station there. Then she tells me that I can’t take on my carry on suitcase because it weighs 14 kg and the limit is 8 kg. This is the same suitcase that I just flew half way around the world with, on the same airline and into the same airport with. First reframe - no problem, at least I won’t have to carry my suitcase all day.
We fly to Frankfurt and we are met out on the tarmac by a couple of buses. Just what you want to see when you don’t have your boarding pass and you have 40 minutes to catch your international flight. Second reframe - no problem, these guys do this all the time and I can’t control this anyway so just go with it.
When I finally get to the terminal I sprint up the stairs (much easier with only my backpack and no carry on luggage) and head to our gate. Of course our terminal is the farthest one from the bus drop off. Third reframe - no problem, I have a long flight so it will be good to get some movement in before I have to sit for 11 hours.
When I get to the transfer station I’m stopped by a gentleman at the front of the line who wants to know what I need. This seems funny to me because I would assume that he would assume that I need a boarding pass. Reframe four – no problem, isn’t it great that we have jobs for such inquisitive people.
Luckily I get my remaining boarding passes (surely a product of my positive thinking :)) and I head to my gate where they are already loading everyone. But, much to my surprise we weren’t loading onto the plane we were having another fun bus ride. I’m not sure how many people can fit onto an A340-600 plane but I do know that it’s more than onto a bus. We take this 10 minute ride up to the airplane and then we sit, with the doors closed, on the tarmac for another 10 minutes while they finish cleaning the plane. Reframe five – no problem, this will only make me appreciate freedom and fresh air even more when they finally open the doors.
I take every extra moment to enjoy the fresh air when they let us off and I wait to be the last one on the plane. I find my seat (the last one in my section) and prepare for a great relaxing flight. At this point I’m starving and thirsty but gratefully I planned ahead and have a bottle of water. As the flight attendant serves dinner she finally gets to me (the last one) and I place my order for the beef with risotto and carrots. “I’ll have to go get that sir” she replies as she heads to the galley. I wait, no food. The gentleman next to me has finished his meal, as well as everyone else in my section, so I ring the call button. When I ask her if I could please get some dinner she apologizes for forgetting me and rushes off to the galley again. In five minutes she returns, sincerely apologizing that she doesn’t have what I want but she does have fish, with wild grain rice and spinach. Reframe six – no problem, this is probably a healthier choice for a Sustainable High Performer and at least I’ll be back in my 80%.
I quickly finish my dinner, now eating like a lion who is protecting his kill and recline my seat to watch a relaxing movie. I push the buttons, nothing. Imagine that, my screen doesn’t work. At this point there are no more surprises. Reframe seven – no problem, I guess there’s nothing more relaxing than reading my book.
Plus this will give me time to write a blog or two :). Reframe eight – I love flying, I love flying, I love flying!
